I mean types like combo amps, tube amps, stack amps, etc.
Yeah – tube vs. transistor is way more than you can go into discussing here. Just go tube and be happy you made the right choice.
Otherwise, combo amps typically include an amplifier and speaker inside the same cabinet, while "stacks" break the amp out into one unit and the speakers into cabinets of their own. Many combo amps include the exact same amplifier that you’ll find in a separate "stack" model, so it comes down to a choice of taste and preference mostly. The biggest benefit from the "stack" is that you can pick & chose your speaker cabinet arrangements however you like. Half stack? That’s a single 4 speaker cabinet and an amp. Full stack? Two 4-speaker cabinets and an amp. You can mix it up however you like as long as the speaker load (yet another discussion) doesn’t overload the amp.
Another thing to look for are open and closed-back speaker cabinets. I’m not sure what "application" or style of music the open-back cabinets (usually only on the combo amps, by the way) appeal to, but for a good rock ‘n roll sound, stay with the closed-back cabinets!!
P.S. At the moment, I play small clubs. I have a 150 watt amp with two power tubes removed so it’s really only pushing 100 watts, and run it into a 2×12 (two 12-inch speakers) cabinet that sits on a tilt-stand. Still can’t turn the amp up much without drowning everyone else out. (And the cabinet gets miked into the PA anyway) If I need more sound for a different venue, I can pop the tubes back in and use my 4×12 cabinet. Many combo amps will let you add additional cabinets, but a 2×12 tube combo amp would be too heavy for me personally – I’d rather make two trips to my car…
I just want to know what effects pedal to buy to get the same sound green day get when they play american idiot.
i would suggest the boss ds-1 Its the orange one, the other option would be to get a rat distortion box. Both of these pedal will give you the sound you looking for!
When i connect my iPod to my guitar amp through the cd/mp3 input, the sound goes out well. However, with the same cable, when i have to play along my cd that’s on pc, horrible noise come.
Thanks for helping !
It could be the CD that has songs on it is not clear…. Try putting the stuff on your ipod then using it
What do you like or dislike about these brands:
Marshall, Line 6, Vox, Randall, Fender
What about these types of amps:
combo
stack
tube
well, first of all, marshall has a great reputation and probably the most popular brand of amps out there. lots of different rock musicians use them. you won’t be disappointed with a marshall, so if you want to play your cards safe and get an amp you know you will like, get a marshall.
but if your willing to get an amp you will LOVE, not only like, try other brands too.
i have a line 6 spider 3 amp 30 watt and i love it. its so versatile, you can play any kinda music with it. it has 4 different tones (clean, crunch, metal, and insane). so its perfect for practically any genre. it also has a whole lotta effects like delay, phaser, tremelo, etc. i would reconmend this to anyone. although its not for everyone.
vox makes amps that will satisfy the most people.
randall makes amps mostly for metal
fender, i don’t know much about.
honestly, the only way to find out if an amp is good for you is to try it.
amp stacks are the kind of amps you see people in bands using onstage. they have a "head" which is where you plug in your guitar, select all the knobs, volume and stuff. and then you have to get a seperate cabinet which is the speaker basically.
i dunno how to really explain tube, but basically its a different kind of amp that makes it sound cooler
Specifically, I’m looking to amplify my acoustic guitar and 2 vocals. The guitar can either be plugged in a 1/4" or xlr and then i will need 2 other xlr inputs for a microphone. What is the cheapest way of accomplishing this? renting a soundboard and speakers or getting amps?
Ther are some pretty cheap units out there with 4 channels on it. I bought a new Fender with 2 speakers and a board for $99. They are a little more now, but you would have to price renting one and what kind of quality you expect. You would still need 3 mics, 3 boom mic holders.
Look for deals on mics. Sometimes Guitar Center will throw in cords. The guitar you can mic it. Boom mic stands will give you flexibility on how you position yourself with your guitar and still sing.
http://www.oldtonezone.com – In the 4th video of this series, I spend some time illustrating with sound and graphics, what happens when you vary the different volume levels in your signal chain. It’s a very simple look at a 3 part signal chain: guitar – preamp tube – power tube, and you should understand after watching this video how those 3 things work together to create different kinds of distortion.
