ok so next month i’m getting a new guitar and amp. I want something small, cheap and reliable, so i narrowed it down to these 2:

Fender 15W: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Fender-Frontman-15G-Guitar-Combo-Amp-100324459-i1145383.gc

OR

Marshall 10W: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Marshall-MG10CD-Combo-Amp-101704062-i1145902.gc

I was thinking to go for the Fender one because I can get 5 more watts for just 10 extra dollars.

Which amp do you think is better?

I have a fender princeton reverb 65′ original all tube, and a marshall DSL 100 also tube. Nothing will compare to the cleans of a fender, and Marshalls are just great for that heavy distortion sound, without the speakers getting all muddy. It really depends on what sound you’re trying to get out of it, and of course what sounds good to you.

I play blues at jam sessions with friends- no gigging- I’ve been shopping for something with tubes for my Jimmie Vaughan Strat -I’ve played through both at GC-can’t seem to make up my mind- any input either way? They’re both 15 watts, the Fender is about $100 more than the Epiphone, but if we disregard the price tag…I’m not looking for volume, just good reasonably-priced tone-and if anyone can point me to a low-priced tube combo amp besides these two, that would be great also..Thanks-

Seamus
PS- I’ve been checking out AX84.com-brings out the DIY’er in me, but that’s a project for another day-after the lawn, the painting, the bathroom remodeling, the new fridge….

If you want a all tube amp and you are trying to stay at low power(the 15 watts you speak of) I would go for the Fender, its a more reliable amp then the Epiphone, but in my opinion, you should go for 30 to 50 watt tube amps, there are hundreds out there for sale, new and used. Here is a web site that I recommend to check out used and new equipment, type in daddy’s junky music.com. and click on the sit that says ”Daddy’s music located in New England and New York, and the east coast, they have 21 stores and some of BEST prices on used amps,I have bought from them and I am TOTALLY IMPRESSED with the quality of their used gear.I live in Indianapolis where the ”mother” Guitar Center is and I frequently go ther to check out gear and they will beat anybodys price on gear, except on the used gear, they are too high priced, so go and at least humor me and check out the site I recommended and you be the judge. Good Luck.

10 amp Amplifier is allright for practising, but ideally you should aim for something 15 amp+. They’re a pretty versatile make, but there’s nothing wrong with being a sheep, and getting a Marshall.

Which do you like best for what style? Explain some pros and cons, I am shopping for an amp.

Well All In all they are all great reliable amp companies.I would say that Marshall has the most in selection for many many different types of music styles. I have a 100watt Marshall SLP it is a great all around amp although for it to get dirty zeppelin type crunch the volume has to be pretty loud as for the Vox AC30 it does not, but in my opinion the vox ac30 has more midrange. I really hate My Amp does not have an effects loop though I think they put them on now. My amp is forever old.I would say go to you local guitar shop with YOUR guitar and plug into many different amps and see which tone will suit you best. Look at the Vox AC30 Marshall SLP or (if your into metal) Marshall JCM 2000 and Fender Twin, but you just might walk out of the store with a HiWatt or a Hughes & Kettner …..

I was wondering if any of the amps that fender makes now are hand wired, like they were back in the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s.

Frankie Kelly Industries – History and Sales of fender amps – Kelly …Information and Reviews for Fender Amps. Fender has been making amps since the … of adding components to make the amp more reliable and cleaner sounding. … This amp being hand wired sounds much more like the original 1957 twin amp. …

Fender “Champ-Amp” 5F1 (1958)
4-5 Watts 8″speaker
I’m using two different mics to check the amp:
1.Astatic JT-30 (all chrome Youngstown-pre1946)with Amphenol on/off switch
2.Electro Voice RE-10
i think everybody in the blues world know this amp, mine is all original but i changed the speaker to a Kendrick Black Frame to save the original in case of selling the amp

are they expensive and are they good?

They’re old bassman amps from the 60’s were great. Over the years they have had some decent amps, and are more known for their reverb units and clean tone. Their cheap amps are not great at all, but they have some higher quality ones that are real nice.

Here is a link to the authorized Fender dealers in Minnesota. http://www.fender.com/resources/dealerfinder/index.php?a=__699090de&p=2&stateprov=MN Maybe one of them could give you more information.

Sorry I couldn’t be of more assistance. Good luck!

This is a short Fender Rhodes amplification test comparing a Roland KC-350 keyboard amp and a Fender Twin Reverb.

The signal is then split using a boss AB switch where the KC-350 is connected to channel A and the fender twin is connected to channel B.

The signal on channel A goes through a tube pre-amp and then into the KC-350.
The signal on channel B goes directly into the Fender Twin Reverb.

The recordings where made using identical microphones and settings on both amps.

The final recording is made by connecting the tube pre-amp directly to the mixer.

Thank you !

Well, do you need a tube amp to get a great Rhodes sound ? In general: NO ! Many tube amps drain the dynamics from the characteristic Rhodes sound. Unless you go for a more harsh and cutting sound, you should look for alternative amplification. Many Rhodes recordings that you can hear on records are recorded directly from the harp of the Rhodes using a DI-box or pre-amp. There is no need for tubes, unless you want to crunch things up a little bit. High quality solid-state pre-amps will do a very good job ! Actually I have used a Crunch Master in this video. I have owned the device since 1988 and I am quite happy with it. What makes it very special is that it’s not only a pre-amp, but also a 1 watt power amp, providing the more nice sounding power-amp crunch/distortion. If you want to try it with the Rhodes I recommend you to use the cab-output (it has a cabinet simulator and power-soak built-in). Eq’ing is important and I find the Eq options of the Crunch Master very satisfying for the Rhodes. A good full-range keyboard amp, a PA or a direct connection to the mixer in a studio will provide you with a great Rhodes sound. But of course, if you like the hard tube sound, a Fender guitar amp is the right choice (the Twin Reverb is ok, but not the best!). For an example of that kind of Rhodes sound, listen to Santana’s “Samba De Sausalito” from the “Welcome” record, or even better the “Lotus” live album. The late great Richard Kermode is playing.

But after all this please remember, that 95% of a great Rhodes sound depends on your piano. I have had several Rhodes pianos and some of them, even though they were in mint condition, could just not be adjusted to sound good. This is strange, but that is how it is. You can get a great sounding MkII that you do anything with and it will always sound great. You can also get a bad sounding MkI suitcase and no matter what you do with it and no matter what amp or preamp you use, it will sound boring. Focus on the piano first and then find the amplification that you like.

I will post more videos when I find the time to make them. Until then… Stay strong ;-)
