In this video we teach some all about output tubes or power tubes used in guitar tube amps. This is part of a longer lesson that is located on our website at nextlevelguitar.com in the amps and settings section.

    what would you have …
what would you have to do to a apm head to be able to switch out tubes and mix and match.. i know the dual and triple rectifier from mesa boogie allow you to do that but im talking about say and amp head from marshall

    as crazy as this …
as crazy as this may sound, I like the clean tone of a solid state more than that of a valve amp

  • theVolvo1964 says:

    Most likely not, …
Most likely not, those amps tend to be shrill most likely due to the speaker. Make sure you get a les bright speaker.

    i got the little …
i got the little fender champ 600 and find it a bit shrill, iam getting a new speaker for it would a change of valve manufacturer soften th etone? i hear jj nice and mellow

Man, a lot of flame …
Man, a lot of flame going on here. It just shows that it’s absolutely ARBITRARY and subjective. There will always be those who prefer one over the other AND NOBODY IS WRONG, and are entitled to their OPINIONS. Let’s all show each other some respect, eh?

    I did.

    I’m not the one …
I’m not the one mocking the video or talking about tubes. Why don’t you read the full conversation before making dumb comments and making stupid accusations?

  • benthemiester says:

    You care don’t you? …
You care don’t you? please tell me you care!! Know one was talking to you numb nuts. We don’t need the thought police telling us what we should and shouldn’t thread, especially since it has nothing to do with you, you busy body. People do care, and yes that’s why they make serious money with signature models. The player/consumer makes the amp, not the other way around. We tell them what we like. If they don’t listen, they end up with names as recognizable as supercool1990.

  • supercool1990 says:

    Jesus Christ would …
Jesus Christ would you quit your bitchin? Fine, you may or may not know everything there is to know about guitar technology. The purpose of this video is to show people who may not know about tube amps what to consider when shopping for one, not for some amateur to spout his supposed “knowledge”. No one cares about your opinion of good tone, no one cares about why companies use famous guitarists over techies (its to make more money, dip shit!). This is useful stuff, so off. Tard

  • cksmith007 says:

    Thanks David, I …
Thanks David, I love the fact that you guys cover a wide array of tone related topics – not just guitar lessons.

  • xxRockst4r says:

    dude, you can’t …
dude, you can’t even spell his name so I’m pretty sure you don’t even know much about who he is. It’s a reason why he’s called “The Master Of Tone”. You don’t get that kinda tone with a solid state amp and just saying “softer, harsher”. Lol
And what does it matter even if they aren’t professionals at circuts, the point is that it’s a big reason why they play tube amps.. All of them.. Vai, Petrucci, Satch etc

  • JonDeth says:

    You also need …
You also need informed as to how these tube guitar amps came to exist. Back when these companies were started, a guy would buy everything direct from the designers such as G.E. or Sylvania

With the bulk orders of tubes, transformers etc. came a schematic. These tube guitar amp companies built their amps off these standard schematics and stuck their label on the enclosures

Ultimately, they added tone stacks to compete and more as time passed. These core designs are still the basis to this day

  • benthemiester says:

    Second, Joe …
Second, Joe Satriani and all the other legends don’t design their own gear,
This is a pile of crap, anyone who knows these people knows they work very closely with designers.

  • JonDeth says:

    And yes, great amps …
And yes, great amps ARE based on circuit class.
A class D will deliver the best performance regardless of how good a lower class may sound or perform.

The overall tone and distortion characteristics are a matter of preamp architecture. As I’ve stated, the only thing a tube really does to your tone is give you some frequency modulation depending on the tubes you use and a thicker signal due to voltage, hence the term warmth.

Jim Marshall, a DRUMMER, couldn’t have even told you that.
    I DID

  • JonDeth says:

My page is a hobby, …
My page is a hobby, I throw something up on it maybe once every few months. I don’t claim my videos to be a good or even fair representation of my work

Show me Joe’s circuit demos though.
Show me Vai’s or Van Halens or Cooley’s

None of them know jack about circuit architecture and throw around catch phrases while promoting overpriced tube amps

Ultimately, a tube just drives your signal as does a chip or transistor. The ultimate defining points will be your clipping, filters and speakers

  • JonDeth says:

    You know literally …
You know literally NOTHING about circuits be it architecture, IC properties and I bet you couldn’t even tell the difference between a resistor from an inductor.

    I however do.
You also contradict yourself on all terms.
People like Satriania just say I want it softer, harsher, rounder, sharper etc. and the tech changes a few pieces on the breadboard and Joe says OK, use that.
    WOW big deal.

Most of what determines a circuits sound is the filtering and clipping characteristics.

  • benthemiester says:

    All this bragging …
All this bragging and no evidence posted to verify all this new cutting edge circuitry that you say is superior. Do you really think you know more about amps than Alexander Dumble and Mesa Boogie who strongly disagree with you? Talkers talk the talk, and these people walk the walk.

  • benthemiester says:

    Have you ever asked …
Have you ever asked yourself why Peavy or other companies work with people like Satriani and other artist when designing amps and guitars and stomp boxes when they could just as easily get a tech on his way to becoming as you say an electronic engineer. John if the video you posted playing guitar demonstrates what your idea of good tone is, which I’m assuming it is since you uploaded for all to hear, if this is good tone, then I’m not very impressed.

  • benthemiester says:

    Where are your amp …
Where are your amp tone test demos. I saw a video that sounded like a lot of distortion but wasn’t blown away by tone.

  • benthemiester says:

    I don’t know who is …
I don’t know who is feeding you this bullshit. Great amps are not based on technical classifications. There based on the subjectivity of listener. Some people believe that after a semester of schools that they want to flex there technical brain muscles. Now your telling me what I would chose. Did you take a class in telepathy or ESP? Do you personally know Satriani and his experience with amps. Where are you getting this stuff from.
