A solid state amp ...
A solid state amp just imitate a valve amp, ina a ss amp there are some artificial circuits that imitate the natural saturation of the tube with a ss amp you have just to turn up th gain knob to obtain a decent sound, the tube amps are more warm and they sound better than a ss. But they need high volumes to sound good. So the choice depend from your budget, tube amps are very expensive, and from were you want to play your amp in general, if i play in bedroom and in a band i prefer small tube amps

In the old pre ...
In the old pre master volume tube amps i would agree that you need to crank it for the best sound. However with new one thats not always the case. I have a marshall JVM and you can get good tone at low volumes. The other thing is with a Plexi or something like it you could always buy an attenuator. That way you can work the tubes to break up but not burst your windows and eardrums in the process. I have a marshall stack in my bedroom and I am getting a Mesa next week. I dont think you can

Tube amps litteraly ...
Tube amps litteraly have a glass tube inside of it, when you play it you get a lot fuller and warmer tone because the voltage goes through tube, solid just has the speaker that you play into
