quality wise for an amp i would suggest a marshall because they have some cheap amps, they are extremely loud (usually) and they outlast most other amps. However some of them don't have good distortion quality, so do your self a favor and try some others out, find one in your price range that suits you, most amps in general last a long time anyways, i have a tube amp from the 1960 that works perfect and has the original tubes.

Guitar:
My personal favorites are fenders if you can get a cheap one, next in line would be a gibson Here are some good quality brands of guitars you can find cheap every once in a while..

Fender
Squier (by Fender)
Dean Martin
Gibson
Peve
Dan Electro (mostly have basses though, you may find a guitar)
Alvarez
Floyd Rose (yes they make guitars too)
ESP

If you look hard enough you can find one cheaper than you think and most likely in your price range.

ADVICE: Don't Just buy an amp or a guitar because someone says that it is good every guitar is different, even though they look the same and are the same model and everything, one may sound like total crap and the other may be perfect for you.

Guitar: Find one that suits you that you are comfortable with and that you like the sound of.

Amp: Doesn't have to be big to be loud or have good quality so find one that you like the sound and tone of. (don't not buy one because it is small, You would be surprised to find that many smaller amps are louder or have better sound than larger amps).
References :
Never EVER buy a guitar/amp combo starter pack. Start off with a decent guitar in the 300$ range and save up for an amp. I personally like Ibanez Artcore's and and they're right under 300. As for amps I'm using a Peavey Vypyr right now, it's a surprisingly nice modelling amp that doesn't cost a lot of money, I think I got it for right at 200$.
References :
If you want TRUE quality, you are going to spend a lot more than 500$.
For Amplifiers, I use the Fender Frontman 212R, trichannel with fantastic gain. These run from 275-325$. That Leaves You 175$. As for guitars, if you want TRUE quality, you will be buying a Gibson, Fender, or even Jackson, but as this is out of your price range, i would recommend an Epiphone SG Special. These are fantastic guitars for the price. HOWEVER, you should upgrade the pickups to either Seymour Duncan P-Rails or EMG 81/85. Links are posted below. Hope this helps.
