There are thousands of guitar effects pedals of all makes, models and versions since the electric guitar first came out. What are the most desirable, awesome and sought after ones, and what makes them that way? If you could have just one which would it be, and why. If you had to give up all your pedals but one, which one would you keep? Who are the greatest pedal makers and why?

As a guitar player, I would keep my chorus. I don’t know if you can say the greatest pedal makers but BOSS is the ones that sells the most. Personal taste actually. Boss have been around for ages and very very very reliable. I own 5 of them and kick them around. They withstand a lot of beating.

Pedals gain popularity based on who uses them – like the "Big Muff" pedal that Hendrix used or the Phaser that Edie Van Halen uses. Some gain a reputation on their own like the Ibanez "Tube Screamer", which you can now get in 3 versions, one is a total replica of the first ones made in the 70’s – even the same chip made by the same factory. At the high end of the market there are a lot of "boutique" pedals basically custom made, but in our digital age the most popular are the "multi-effects" units that even include models of different amps and cabs. The Line 6 Pod sound has even taken over recording – usually you’re hearing the "Tweed" setting on a Pod, not a Les Paul through a Fender Twin.
