Author: I’m looking to purchase a tube amp, probably a 40-50w combo, and I was wondering how much the brand plays into effect for the sound.
The two distinct sounds that I’m seeking are the SRV/John Mayer/Jimi Hendrix sound (I know that’s mostly cause they all use/used fenders, but bear with em…) and the classic rock/ southern rock sound, like Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Aerosmith, etc.
Which tube amps would give me those sounds? Hell, can anyone give me a breakdown of which brands sound like which genres?

I believe all the above used Marshall 50s primarily and either Fender Twin Reverbs or Bassman 50s secondarily.
Often in recording many guitar greats would use oddball little amps, frequently solid state, that they would keep secret. The Pignose was heavily used in this way.
